While the dictionary definition may be "a man unduly devoted to style, neatness, and fashion in dress and appearance", Wikipedia provides a much lengthier description beginning "a man who places particular importance upon physical appearance, refined language, and leisurely hobbies, pursued with the appearance of nonchalance in a cult of self." For us, taking care in our appearance and behavior does not exclude any of the traditional aspects of masculinity in terms of strength, assertiveness and physical prowess and instead puts those things in the context of being successful and happy in the modern era.
In an era where #metoo, incels, feminism, bro culture, multiculturalism, and divisive politics are all part of the discussion about masculinity and gender roles, there is a lot of confusion among men as to how to act or react in response. We felt that sharing our own conversations about what it means to be man and which cross generations and social and cultural backgrounds could help provide an honest, engaging perspective and encourage other men - and women - to talk frankly and constructively with their friends.
